Sexual Harassment by Industry: Where Power Dynamics Drive the Risk

Sexual harassment occurs in every kind of workplace, but it does not occur at the same rate or in the same way. Certain industries concentrate power in a small number of people, run on relationships rather than process, and conduct much of their business outside an office. Those conditions make harassment easier to commit and considerably harder to report.

Finance and Private Equity

Compensation runs through discretionary bonuses, deal staffing, and sponsorship, which gives senior figures enormous informal leverage. Much of the culture happens after hours, at client dinners, conferences, and entertainment events.

Retaliation here rarely looks like a firing. It looks like being staffed on fewer deals, losing a sponsor, a bonus that comes in unexplainedly low, or removal from client-facing work.

Media, Fashion, and Entertainment

These industries run on gatekeepers. A single producer, editor, designer, or agent may control your next contract, your credits, and your introductions. Work is short-term and project-based, so there is often no HR department in any meaningful sense.

Harassment frequently arrives dressed as opportunity: a private meeting about your future, a hotel-room script read, a fitting behind closed doors. Retaliation is quiet. The calls simply stop coming.

Healthcare and Medical Practices

Two distinct risks operate here. Staff are harassed by patients and their families, and staff in smaller practices are harassed by the physician or dentist who owns the business. In an owner-operated practice there is often no independent HR at all, and the professional standing of the person accused makes staff fear they will not be believed.

Hospitality and Food Service

Tipped work creates direct financial pressure to tolerate customer behaviour. Staff frequently work alone, late, in isolated areas, and turnover is high enough that patterns go unrecorded. Some jurisdictions have responded with specific measures, including the New York City requirement that hotel workers be provided panic buttons.

Law and Professional Services

Partnership structures concentrate authority in people who are also the firm’s revenue. Associates depend on partners for work, reviews, and their future in a small and talkative market. Complaints against a rainmaker are the ones firms are least willing to pursue.

The Freelancer and Contractor Trap

Across all of these sectors, workers are frequently engaged as freelancers, contractors, or per-project talent, and are then told they have no protections.

Do not assume that is correct. Whether you are covered depends on the reality of the working relationship, who directed and controlled your work, where it was performed, and which state law applies. New York and New Jersey both extend protections beyond the traditional employee category, and New York State law expressly reaches independent contractors for harassment purposes.

Why Industry Context Helps Your Case

Employers sometimes argue that this is simply how the sector works. That argument tends to backfire. Where an industry has a known risk profile, and an employer knew about the risk and did nothing, that knowledge supports the conclusion that the harm was foreseeable and the response inadequate.

Practical Steps in a Relationship-Driven Industry

Confirm meeting time, place, and purpose in writing beforehand
Decline hotel-room meetings and propose public alternatives
Preserve texts and direct messages, which carry most of the evidence in these sectors
Track work volume, staffing, and bonus history, so a later drop-off is demonstrable
Be cautious about informal warnings to leadership, which can trigger retaliation before you are protected

Conclusion

Industry culture is context, not a defense. If the way your sector operates made harassment more likely and reporting more dangerous, that is a reason to get advice early, not a reason to accept it as the cost of the work.
